Cambridge School started teaching Portuguese as a foreign language more than half a century ago in its various centres in Portugal.
Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the world and is officially spoken by 200 million people, not only in Portugal but also in other countries around the world. Consequently, the demand for courses has increased in tandem with the growth of its importance as a global language.
Our Portuguese courses are designed for any foreign learner who, for professional, social, academic or other reasons, wants to obtain the highest level possible in a limited period of time.
Cambridge School achieves prestige as a result of its teaching technique through the Direct Method – a dynamic approach that accentuates the basic reality that, whatever the language, our communicative method develops linguistic confidence and the ability to deal readily with functional situations.
The programme meets the specific objectives of the students, through simulation of their professional and social activities in the classroom.
After an assessment of linguistic knowledge and a needs analysis, the programme for the course is suggested, as well as the time most suited to the student’s requests and availability. When choosing Cambridge School, the student can choose from two different types of courses: classes in small groups (3 to 6 students), the demand for which has been increasing, and private classes (one teacher per student).
Cambridge School offers the following programmes in Portuguese:
5 Levels, from Beginners to Advanced (A1 to C1);
3 to 6 students;
20 days – 40 Lessons;
2 lessons per day – Monday to Friday;

Cambridge School students come from the most varied professional fields: diplomats, doctors, engineers, executives from international companies who are working in Portugal or in preparation for posts in Africa or Brazil, NGO staff, missionaries or members of the clergy, as well as university and exchange scheme students.
Students have the opportunity to socialise with teachers and other students during the coffee break, as well as participate in weekly study visits to places of cultural interest, at no additional cost. Professional study visits can be organized during individual classes.
We are also available to provide information and assistance when booking accommodation at local hotels.
Nowadays, most people are aware of the standards represented by the suite of English exams administered by the University of Cambridge ESOL.
However, many do not know that a similar suite of official exams exists for Portuguese and represents approximately the same standards. These also belong to the 5-level ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) system of language assessment and certification.
