Cambridge School has offered quality teaching for over half a century in Portugal.

More than 1400 students are prepared annually for exams in English, French, German and Portuguese, whose certificates are recognised internationally.
All teaching consists of 100% communicative interaction between teachers and students, using up-to-date methods and materials and all teachers are qualified and native-level speakers of the language they teach. New students are given knowledge assessment tests so that they can join groups which are composed of students at the same level.

We have a wide range of courses:

Cambridge School provides quality and has more than half a century of experience in Portugal.

Cambridge School was founded in 1966 and, at the time, was one of the few organisations in Portugal dedicated to teaching English, French, German and Portuguese to Foreigners.
Cambridge School was established according to the principles of techniques of teaching a language through communication, in which only the language being learned is used. Over the years, our approach to teaching and methodology has evolved and improved to reflect the demands of our students, even though the main focus has always been on improving oral skills.
The development of the school has been accompanied by modern technologies and, at present, many of our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. There is also an internet component (Cambridge School Online) that complements classroom teaching, providing our students with various tasks, supplementary activities, worksheets as well as information about the lessons and subjects under study.
The school has also grown from an original location to the nine locations that currently exist in Portugal: six in the area of Lisbon and one in Porto, another in Coimbra and another one in Funchal.
In the early years, Cambridge School students were mostly adults with a low elementary and intermediate level, along with some students preparing for the Cambridge University exams: Cambridge English-First (then called Lower Certificate) and Cambridge English-Proficiency. Over the years, the level and objectives of our students have changed, which has been reflected in the evolution of the school. In the late seventies, “junior” courses (for young people) were created and, over time, student numbers increased significantly.
Today, and as far as our student population is concerned, the reality is different. Thus, we find that the total of our 8,000 – 10,000 students is approximately divided into three equal parts: – “children” and “juniors”, teenagers and adults, most of whom are in an intermediate to high level.
Most students come to Cambridge School because they want to ‘activate’ their ability to use a language more effectively. In a traditional language learning environment, students learn grammar, reading, translation and some writing. Students coming to Cambridge School want to be able to have better speaking and writing skills in order to obtain certification or to improve their language skills for getting a job or a promotion. They want to be more ‘at ease’ when using another language actively. More than 1400 students are prepared annually for internationally recognised examinations in English, French, German and Portuguese for Foreigners.
Our students can choose from a variety of options: general group courses, intensive courses during the academic year and during the summer, individual or semi-private classes and lessons for companies, either in our own facilities or on the company’s own premises.
Cambridge School only employs teachers whose mother tongue is the language they teach. There are currently around 120 teachers who teach English, French, German and Portuguese to Foreigners in our schools. All teachers must go through a careful selection process, they must have university qualifications and, in addition, a postgraduate qualification for teaching the language for which they are hired.
